Three Years After the Fall of Roe, We’re Living the Consequences
Washington, D.C. (June 24, 2025) — Today marks the third anniversary of the Supreme Court’s erroneous decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, which overturned Roe v. Wade and stripped everyone in this country of the constitutional protection of the right to abortion.
Fatima Goss Graves, president and CEO of the National Women’s Law Center, issued the following statement:
“We knew overturning Roe would have devastating consequences, but three years later, the reality is even more dire than we feared. Across the country, people have been denied life-saving care, forced to wait in parking lots while they bleed, air-lifted across state lines for urgent treatment, and criminalized for seeking or providing abortion services. Patients have needlessly suffered infections, trauma, and even death. Doctors have been investigated for doing their jobs. Parents have faced charges for helping their children access care. The surveillance and criminalization of pregnant people have intensified at an alarming rate.
But we are not powerless. Over the past three years, the National Women’s Law Center has fought back, working with clients, providers, and communities to challenge harmful policies, hold institutions accountable, and expand access to reproductive health care. We launched the Abortion Access Legal Defense Fund to help cover legal expenses for those targeted for seeking or supporting abortion care.
We are also building toward a future where everyone can access abortion care, regardless of who they are or where they live. We’re working with partners, policymakers, and advocates to restore the federal right to abortion and ensure meaningful access for all.
This year, we joined forces with Abortion Access Now and Free & Just to bring over 100 storytellers to Capitol Hill, the largest coordinated presence for abortion rights since Roe fell. These patients, providers, and advocates shared their experiences directly with lawmakers, highlighting the human cost of abortion bans and the urgent need for action.
The majority of people in this country support access to abortion. We are not going anywhere, and we will not allow extremists to chip away at the rights we still hold. Abortion is health care. Reproductive freedom is a human right. And we will never stop fighting until those truths are reflected in every law, every policy, and every community in this country.”
