Secretary of Labor Nominee Lori Chavez-DeRemer Says Her “Guiding Principle Will be President Trump’s Guiding Principle”

(Washington, D.C. Feb. 19, 2025)  Today, the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee held a hearing regarding the nomination of Lori Chavez-DeRemer to lead the Department of Labor.

The following is a statement by Gaylynn Burroughs, Senior Vice President for Education and Workplace Justice at the National Women’s Law Center:

“As Elon Musk and his DOGE crew indiscriminately fire and furlough workers across federal agencies, and President Trump’s executive orders endanger the rights of every worker in this country, we’re witnessing unprecedented attacks on working people. Labor Secretary nominee Lori Chavez-DeRemer made no assurances in today’s hearing that she will stand up to Musk and Trump and their extreme anti-worker onslaught. Instead, DeRemer made clear she would back down from her prior support for efforts to strengthen labor laws and is ready to submit to Trump’s vision of an America that prioritizes the wealthy over the working class. Workers need a fierce, uncompromising protector now more than ever, and today’s hearing has left them in the lurch.”
