PRESS RELEASE: NWLC Calls on Senate Judiciary Committee to Reject Pam Bondi’s Nomination for Attorney General

Washington, DC – As the Senate Judiciary Committee prepares to consider the nomination of Pam Bondi for attorney general, Fatima Goss Graves, president and CEO of the National Women’s Law Center (NWLC), has urged the committee to reject her candidacy, citing Bondi’s troubling record on gender justice issues and ethical concerns around her public service.

“Ms. Bondi’s record on abortion access, LGBTQ rights, immigration, healthcare, and election denialism raises serious concerns about her capacity to serve as Attorney General,” wrote Goss Graves. “Her record also reveals a litany of ethical concerns and deep-seated political partisanship, casting doubt on her ability to protect the independence of the Department of Justice, uphold the Department’s commitment to the rule of law, and enforce the laws that protect the rights of women and girls.”

Goss Graves goes on to highlight serious concerns around Bondi’s ability to enforce the law independently from the personal and political interests of Donald Trump.

Specifically, she points to Bondi’s decision to not investigate Trump University after her campaign-related fund received an illegal $25,000 donation from the Trump Foundation. She also called out Bondi’s baseless election fraud claims and bogus lawsuits after the 2020 election.

As Attorney General, Ms. Bondi would be the lawyer for the people of the United States, not Donald Trump’s personal lawyer,” wrote Goss Graves. “Ms. Bondi’s record raises serious concerns about her ability to separate these roles and exercise legal judgment independently from the White House and provides additional grounds for rejecting her nomination.”

Other concerns Goss Graves cites in her letter include:

  • Anti-Abortion Advocacy: Her affiliations with extreme anti-abortion groups and defense of Florida’s 24-hour waiting period, which restricts access to reproductive health care.
  • Opposition to LGBTQ Rights: Bondi’s persistent efforts to oppose marriage equality.
  • Support for Racial Profiling and Anti-Immigrant Policies: Bondi’s backing of systemic racial profiling in Florida and her opposition to the Obama administration’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.
  • Attacks on Health Care Access: Bondi’s role in efforts to overturn the Affordable Care Act, which ultimately ended Medicaid coverage for 25 million Americans under the ACA.
