NWLC: Trump’s Ed Pick Fails Students, Prioritizes Politics Over Protection
Washington, D.C. (Nov. 20) – On Tuesday, Donald Trump announced the nomination of Linda McMahon to lead the U.S. Department of Education.
The following is a statement from Gaylynn Burroughs, vice president of education and workplace justice at the National Women’s Law Center (NWLC):
“Donald Trump has chosen yet another unqualified, dangerous sycophant to carry out his agenda. His choice to lead the Department of Education fails students and shows his complete indifference to creating safe and inclusive schools where every student has equal opportunity to education, no matter who they are or where they live. Despite the Department’s civil rights roots and student-centered mission, his consolation prize to McMahon makes it clear that students are not important.
“All students deserve to go to school and have the right to learn and grow without fear of harassment or discrimination. The Department of Education’s sole purpose is to protect equal learning opportunities for all students, and the head of it must be focused on that. Linda McMahon has no background in public schools nor any understanding of what it takes to help every student thrive. We will continue to advocate for leadership that centers the safety and security of all students.”
