NWLC statement on Supreme Court taking up ‘conversion therapy’ case
Washington, DC (March 10) – The Supreme Court today announced it will hear Chiles v. Salazar, a challenge to a law in Colorado banning harmful “conversion therapy”’ efforts on LGBTQI+ youth.
Ma’ayan Anafi, senior counsel for health equity and justice at the National Women’s Law Center, issued the following statement in response:
“It is alarming that the Supreme Court would consider a challenge to Colorado’s critical protections for LGBTQI+ youth. Colorado, like 22 other states, has recognized that no child should be subjected to ‘conversion therapy,’ the dangerous attempt to change people’s sexual orientation or gender identity. Opposed by every major medical organization, this long-debunked practice is unethical, harmful, and even deadly. Even still, recent studies show that 15% of LGBTQ youth continue to be threatened with or subjected to conversion therapy—making these state protections more necessary than ever. SCOTUS must uphold Colorado’s ban on conversion therapy, and we will continue to advocate to keep LGBTQI+ youth safe.”
