NWLC Responds to Supreme Court’s Decision on Texas’ Abortion Ban

The following is a statement by Fatima Goss Graves, president and CEO of the National Women’s Law Center (NWLC):

“Today’s decision by the Supreme Court allows the lawsuit brought by abortion providers to continue but fails the people of Texas by allowing this outrageous abortion ban to remain in effect. While there could be an opening soon for providers to offer the essential care they need, the reality remains that the ban’s devastating effects will continue.

“For more than 100 days, patients have had their rights taken from them, and been forced to go without the critical abortion care they need. Providers, unable to do their day-to-day work, have experienced relentless mental and financial stress. Neither providers nor the people of Texas have time to navigate the legal uncertainty created by this decision and wait for a drawn out legal process while their health, lives, and futures are on the line.

“Make no mistake: the right to abortion is not safe, and today the Supreme Court betrayed our constitution and emboldened anti-abortion politicians in states across the country who are designing copycat laws. We will not stop fighting for all people to live in a world where they are able to control their own bodies, lives, and futures, and we will work to urgently secure additional, permanent, federal protections to bring us closer to that reality.”
