NWLC Reacts to the Election of Biden and Harris as Next President and VP
The following is a statement by Fatima Goss Graves, president and CEO of the National Women’s Law Center (NWLC):
“Today we celebrate the endurance of our democracy, and the heroes who have brought us the end of the Trump administration: the activists, the volunteers, and the Black, brown, and indigenous women organizers. We also celebrate the first woman, and first Black and South Asian person to be elected as vice president. Fifty-five years after the Voting Rights Act, 100 years after the 19th Amendment, and 150 years after the 15th amendment, this country has redefined what is possible for women of color.
“But as threats against the integrity of our democracy continue, we are mindful of the work ahead. While nearly 74 million Americans—a decisive majority—cast their ballots for progress, 69 million opted instead for white supremacy and oppression. The path forward must be traversed by all of us, but led by our president-elect and vice-president-elect. For them, the task ahead is not simply to reverse four years of racist acts, cruel policies, and economic regression. It is to redefine safety for our communities, to hold up child care as the backbone of our economy, to create equitable and dignified schools and workplaces for women and girls, and to dismantle the systems that brought us Trumpism in the first place. We are all watching and waiting for them to inspire and motivate the fortitude we need to rebuild a more equitable country for us all.”
