July 29, 2024 – Today, President Biden announced a comprehensive framework for Supreme Court reform.
In response, Emily Martin, chief program officer of the National Women’s Law Center, released the following statement:
“The Supreme Court is broken and urgently needs major structural reform — not repairs around the edges. It has been taken over by radical conservatives who serve their political interests over the people, and who are focused on empowering and enriching themselves at the expense of justice for everyone else.
“As President Biden said in his op-ed, the actions of this Supreme Court are not normal. It is not normal to grant presidents broad immunity that permits — and frankly, incentivizes — them to commit crimes while in office; it is not normal for justices to receive lavish gifts from individuals with interests before the Court; it is not normal for a justice to express support for January 6th insurrectionists and yet refuse to recuse himself from related cases. The corruption on full display by this Court is possible only because some justices believe they are truly untouchable.
“We support President Biden’s call for a constitutional amendment to remove presidential immunity, as well as his proposal to establish term limits for Supreme Court justices and enforce a binding code of conduct for the Supreme Court. These reforms are urgently needed and are essential to restore integrity, impartiality, and public trust in our highest court.”
