NWLC Reacts to Debt Ceiling Deal
The following is a statement from Fatima Goss Graves, president and CEO of the National Women’s Law Center (NWLC):
“We are relieved that there is a bipartisan deal that averts a catastrophic default, but we shouldn’t have been in this position to begin with. The same group of extremists who have been attacking our bodily autonomy and chipping away at our freedoms manufactured this crisis to keep power, resources, and wealth in the hands of a privileged few. Not being able to pay our country’s debts is in no one’s interest, but neither is putting the burden on struggling families and continuing to bargain away the lives and livelihoods of women and children. To make it harder for struggling families to put food on the table, make this month’s rent, and afford necessities like child care – while simultaneously making it easier for the rich and powerful to cheat their tax obligations or pay their fair share – is a lose-lose situation for our entire country.”
