NWLC, Public Citizen, & More Than 110 Organizations Call for Investigation of Elon Musk’s Lawless Government Takeover

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The National Women’s Law Center (NWLC) and Public Citizen, along with more than 110 organizations, called on Congress today to swiftly investigate Elon Musk and the lawless takeover of the federal government by his so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Reports allege that Musk’s team, which has been given unprecedented power by Donald Trump, has unlawfully disrupted government operations, accessed sensitive data, and infiltrated Treasury payment systems.

Millions of Americans are likely to be harmed if Elon Musk and DOGE are allowed to continue to infiltrate and take over critical government systems,” the groups said in their letter. “We demand that Congress immediately investigate Elon Musk and DOGE activities to ensure that Americans’ private, personal information have not been compromised and that operating systems continue to function without disruption.”

The letter, which was sent to congressional leadership, cites various instances of lawless activity from Elon Musks’ DOGE, including:

  • Gaining access to secure spaces and classified information at the U.S. Agency for International Development and other agencies, despite lacking security clearances;
  • Attempting to access private and financial information at the Treasury Department, Office of Personnel Management, and other agencies; and
  • Disregarding temporary restraining orders blocking an Office of Management and Budget memo that attempted to freeze federal grants and loans, including shutting down payments for programs for which Congress has appropriated funding.

The signers concluded: “Congress has a duty under our Constitution to assert and protect its own spending power and exercise its oversight functions to ensure that the Executive Branch does not overreach or abuse its power. What we have seen from Elon Musk and DOGE indicates an astounding disregard for the law.”
