NWLC on Moms.Gov: “A Pronatalist, Anti-Woman Website Littered with Misinformation”
Washington, DC — The National Women’s Law Center (NWLC) released the following statement condemning the Trump-Vance administration’s launch of “moms.gov,” a taxpayer-funded website promoting anti-abortion rhetoric, anti-science misinformation, and policies that could harm pregnant people and families.
“Instead of investing in universal child care, paid leave, and affordable health care, the Trump-Vance administration is spending taxpayer dollars on a pronatalist, anti-woman website littered with misinformation that could endanger women’s health and put children at risk,” said Emily Martin, chief program officer at NWLC. “Moms.gov disregards evidence-based medicine, advances an anti-abortion agenda, fails to mention the rights that pregnant and parenting people have at work and at school, and misleads families about the impact of the administration’s economic policies. If Donald Trump truly wanted to support moms and families, he would stop attacking the very programs that help people afford health care, child care, housing, and groceries.”
Among the ways moms.gov misleads women and families:
- Promotes dangerous anti-abortion “pregnancy centers,” which have a long history of deception and medical misinformation that have harmed patients and their babies.
- Directs pregnant people through the site’s “pregnancy centers” resource to a website that collects personal information, including names, addresses, marital status, and menstruation dates, that may be shared with anti-abortion activists and others.
- Provides one-sided information that could encourage parents to reject evidence-based medical care, including vaccines, on the basis of religious objections.
- Directs people to resources created by extremist anti-abortion organizations with documented histories of discrimination, including Focus on the Family.
- Lists ways in which work can be harmful to pregnant workers’ health, without noting that pregnant workers have a legal right to accommodations to protect their health.
The National Women’s Law Center is at the forefront of efforts to expose and push back against the dangerous pronatalist, anti-woman agenda influencing the Trump-Vance administration. Last year, NWLC released a report detailing ties between the administration and the pronatalist movement, and recently published a fact sheet examining how the Heritage Foundation’s January report on “saving the family” seeks to undermine women’s rights and strip families of critical basic need supports.
