NWLC Launches Silence Breakers, Stories of the Time’s Up Legal Defense Fund

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the National Women’s Law Center (NWLC) launched Silence Breakers, an interactive storytelling project featuring the stories of survivors of workplace sex harassment and the attorneys who help them seek justice through NWLC’S TIME’S UP Legal Defense Fund.

Created in 2018 in the wake of #MeToo, the TIME’S UP Legal Defense Fund remains the only nationwide resource providing both legal and media support to people facing workplace sex harassment. Since its launch, more than 12,000 requests for legal help have come in through our Legal Network for Gender Equity. And through the Fund, we have committed legal funding in 456 matters. It also helps survivors share their stories publicly, including most recently Lorrayne Mavromatis, who came forward regarding alleged harassment at MrBeast.

Silence Breakers includes the stories of:

  • Emily, a former McDonald’s worker involved in a class-action lawsuit alleging widespread sexual harassment;
  • Sam, a singer who challenged abuse in the opera world;
  • Melissa, a dentistry professor denied a promotion after reporting sexual harassment.

The storytelling project will expand as new stories are added.

“Almost a decade after the #MeToo movement sparked a global culture reckoning, we continue to be asked: Is #MeToo still relevant? and the resounding answer is absolutely, yes,” said Lizzy Vogel, senior counsel at the TIME’S UP Legal Defense Fund at NWLC. “Every survivor who shares their story creates a ripple effect, inspiring others to speak out and seek justice. We are proud to support these featured survivors, and many future ones, in holding their employers accountable and speaking truth to power.”
