NWLC Finds Americans Strongly Support Abortion Coverage in Health Plans

Washington, DC – In the wake of Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” which ended enhanced premium tax credits for people who get their health care through the Affordable Care Act (ACA), the National Women’s Law Center (NWLC) released a poll that found voters overwhelmingly support health insurance plans that cover abortion care.

The poll comes as anti-abortion groups like Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America and Americans United for Life are demanding that any measure to restore the tax credits should also ban all insurance coverage of abortion in the ACA marketplaces.

“This poll reaffirms the American public’s strong support for abortion protections,” said Jasmine Tucker, vice president of research at NWLC. “Yet, while Americans understand that abortion care is health care and deserves to be covered by insurance just like any other medical procedure, anti-abortion extremists continue to push for restrictive policies that would place essential health care even further out of reach for many people. Congress should listen to the voices of their constituents, not well-funded anti-abortion interest groups, and pass expanded ACA subsidies without more harmful and deeply unpopular abortion restrictions.”

  • The poll showed that an overwhelmingly majority of voters (67%) agree, including 49% who strongly agree, that health insurance plans, whether paid for by individuals or employers, should offer coverage for the full range of pregnancy-related medical care, including abortion care.
  • Seven in ten voters (71%), including more than half of Republicans (56%), agree that lawmakers should be focused on lowering health care costs for individuals and families, not taking away coverage.
  • Two-thirds (66%) of voters agree that when politicians ban insurance coverage for abortion care, they are interfering with a patient’s right to make personal decisions about their health and putting a patient’s health and life at risk.
