WASHINGTON — Following news of the death of Gloria Steinem, the National Women’s Law Center released the following statement from its CEO and president, Fatima Goss Graves:

“Gloria Steinem did not simply make history—she inspired generations of women to do the same, to follow their own paths and fight for their right to be in the room. Steinem deeply understood that, in order to change policy, you need to change culture, and that women will always be the engine behind that change. For more than five decades she created the containers for women to gather.”

“As the founder of Ms. magazine, the first feminist magazine of its kind, she worked to highlight the complex lives of women. She broke social norms and taboos by covering issues such as abortion, sex and race discrimination, and sexual violence. By putting these issues on the national stage, Steinem’s reporting helped shape early consequential victories for the women’s rights movement.”

“I’ll never forget how our conversations and her guidance helped shape my own perspective and work. So much of what Gloria fought for and helped to build is currently under threat. At the National Women’s Law Center, we are committed to preserving her legacy and following her example — by not shying away from saying the hard things, challenging injustice, and fighting for a country where women and girls are free to be themselves. We honor her by continuing this work, by gathering on the best and worst days, and building our beautiful movement.”
