NWLC Blasts Russel Vought for Anti-Abortion Responses During Confirmation Hearing

Washington, DC At his confirmation hearing today before the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee (HSGAC), Russell Vought made clear that, if confirmed, he would use his position as director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) to further dismantle reproductive rights protections.

In response to his testimony and questioning, Alison Gill, director of nominations and democracy at the National Women’s Law Center (NWLC), issued the following statement on Vought, a key architect of Project 2025:

“Russel Vought’s confirmation hearing left no doubt he would use his authority over OMB to follow through on his extreme Project 2025 agenda and further restrict access to reproductive health care. During his questioning, Vought expressed support for policies that place abortion and reproductive care further out of reach, including banning providers who perform abortions from receiving essential federal funds and allowing dangerous anti-abortion centers to receive federal money that would help them to further spread misinformation. He also would block foreign aid to organizations that provide abortion services, refer people for abortion care, or speak out in support of abortion access.

Entrusting the federal budget and government operations to someone who has made his intention to prioritize Trump’s extreme agenda over the needs and rights of the American people would be disastrous. The Senate must reject his nomination.”

Earlier this week, Fatima Goss Graves, president and CEO of NWLC, urged HSGAC to reject Vought’s nomination. Read the letter here

NWLC released a report outlining how the Project 2025 agenda, which Vought was a key architect of, would impact reproductive health access, along with other issues that are central to the well-being of women and the LGBTQIA+ community. To read the report, click here
