ICYMI: Congressional Republicans Target Family Programs to Fund Tax Cuts for Billionaires

Washington, DC – In case you missed it, House Republicans are advancing their Project 2025 agenda by proposing sweeping cuts to critical family programs, which disproportionately affect women and children, to offset massive tax cuts for billionaires and mega-corporations.

This comes as the Treasury Department released its analysis on the cost of extending the tax giveaways in the 2017 Republican tax package. The analysis found that that while the bottom 75 million  families would barely benefit from the extensions, earning less than a dollar a day, the wealthiest 1% and .01% would be getting a $32,000 and $314,000 tax cut, respectively.

House Republicans are targeting a number of anti-poverty programs, including:

  • Medicaid: A lifeline for women, who make up the majority of recipients. Medicaid covers vital services like birth control, maternity care, and prescription drugs, addressing women’s health needs throughout their life.
  • Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP): This program ensures low-income individuals and families— a majority of whom are women —have access to basic food assistance.
  • Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF): TANF provides income support, child care, and work assistance to low-income families. In 2022, women accounted for 84% of the adults served by TANF.
