The BLS report shows losses were concentrated in hospitality and education, sectors where women are overrepresented. On top of that, about 165,000 women left the labor force in July — meaning they are no longer working or looking — while men’s participation held steady.

The unemployment rate ticked down to 4.1 percent, and not because women found work. “When women leave the labor force altogether, and many did last month, they’re no longer counted as unemployed, so it can make that number appear artificially smaller than it is,” Jasmine Tucker, vice president of research at the National Women’s Law Center, told me.
