Trump’s shift of special education, civil rights from Department of Education worries advocates

Gender Justice, which five years ago also won a $300,000 settlement on behalf of a transgender student barred from using a boys’ locker room at Coon Rapids High School, referred a Minnesota Star Tribune reporter to the National Women’s Law Center for comment on the U.S. Education Department’s maneuvering. In a statement on the center’s website, Shiwali Patel, the group’s senior director of education justice, accused the Trump administration of “systematically dismantling the Department of Education’s infrastructure that protects students’ civil rights and equal access to education, eroding protections for millions of students.”
