Senate Confirms Anti-Civil Rights Lawyer Anna St. John to District Court in Louisiana
Washington, DC – The U.S. Senate today confirmed Anna St. John to the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana in a 51-45 party line vote.
“Anna St. John has built her career fighting to undermine consumer protections, silence survivors of sexual harassment and assault, and strip away protections for LGBTQIA+ people,” said Alison Gill, director of nominations and democracy at the National Women’s Law Center (NWLC). “Make no mistake: St. John was nominated and confirmed not despite her dangerous views and personal loyalty to Donald Trump, but because of them. With this confirmation, Trump and Senate Republicans are blatantly showing what they expect from our federal courts, which is judges who will favor corporate interests and discrimination over affordability and civil rights.”
St. John has dedicated her legal career to advancing corporate interests above the rights of consumers and those who face harm or discrimination at school and work. NWLC sent a letter to the Senate Judiciary Committee opposing St. John’s confirmation in January 2026.
- St. John’s legal work is focused on delegitimizing and stigmatizing class action suits to shift public scrutiny from corporate wrongdoing that harms workers and consumers. She has even claimed that damages paid to people seeking justice after being harmed by corporations would go to fund “left wing causes.”
- St. John opposed federal legislation that prevents corporations from using forced arbitration in cases involving sexual harassment and assault—advocating instead for the rights of corporations over survivors.
- She argued to end affirmative action and claimed in a brief to the Supreme Court that affirmative action is not justified in higher education admissions since discrimination against people of color has been remedied.
- In another Supreme Court brief, St. John used outdated and sexist stereotypes to argue that cis women and girls cannot compete if trans athletes are allowed to participate in sports.
- St. John has also argued against laws that protect LGBTQIA+ people from discrimination by businesses.
