NWLC Condemns Supreme Court Decision Dismantling the U.S. Department of Education
WASHINGTON, DC (July 14, 2025) — Today, the Supreme Court, without explanation, cleared the way for the Trump administration to dismantle the U.S. Department of Education.
In response, Gaylynn Burroughs, Vice President for Education and Workplace Justice at the National Women’s Law Center, issued the following statement:
“We are outraged that the Supreme Court has greenlit the Trump administration’s unlawful and reckless plan to gut the Department of Education by cutting half of its staff. For decades, the agency has played an essential role in safeguarding the rights of students, especially girls, students with disabilities, LGBTQI+ youth, and students of color. Without enough staff and resources, students will face more barriers to educational opportunity and have fewer places to turn to when their rights are violated.
This is part of a coordinated plan by the Trump administration to dismantle the federal government and roll back hard-won civil rights protections. Rather than do its job to check and stop this extreme lawlessness, the Supreme Court has inexplicably allowed it to continue. The damage inflicted by this decision will be felt for generations.”
