Washington, DC – June 5, 2024 – Fatima Goss Graves, President and CEO of the National Women’s Law Center, issued the following statement after the Senate rejected a bill that would have codified a right to contraception in federal law:
“We are outraged that some Senators blocked passage of the Right to Contraception Act, especially at a time when extremists are threatening access to birth control, blocking access to IVF, and criminalizing abortion. Their refusal to vote to protect our right to birth control goes against the will of the people and it demonstrates that our right to contraception is not safe.
Contraception access is fundamental for our autonomy, equality, health, and well-being. Denying people access to contraception not only violates their rights but also worsens existing disparities in healthcare access and outcomes. We will keep working every day to improve access to birth control and protect our right to contraception. Everyone should have the right and ability to get the birth control they need, without barriers.”
