Maine Sen. Susan Collins Meets Judge Garland and Is “More Convinced Than Ever That the Process Should Proceed”

Republican Senator Susan Collins today met with Judge Merrick Garland, nominated to be an Associate Justice on the Supreme Court.  Among other things, Sen. Collins said that she found Judge Garland to be “extremely straightforward” and reported that “[h]e gave very thorough, impressive responses to all of my questions.”  Like Senator Mark Kirk, who met with the nominee last week, Senator Collins stated that, in her view, the Senate Judiciary Committee should hold hearings on Judge Garland’s nomination, which she characterized as “following in the regular order.”  She also opined that, if more of her Republican colleagues met with Judge Garland, they would be as impressed as she was and – hopefully – would support holding hearings. Let’s hope that she is right, and that she will do more than hope, and urge Senate Republican leadership to abandon its obstruction and #DoYourJob.
