The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the deep gaps in our economic and social infrastructure that have resulted from decades of underinvestment and policy choices that failed to center the needs of women, people of color, and families. Yet even before the COVID-19 pandemic and the economic recession, too many working people lacked the support and protections to allow them to care for themselves without sacrificing economic stability. The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the universal need for—and far from universal access to—paid sick days in the United States. Paid sick days is a vital part of the care infrastructure we need to recover and build an economy that works for all of us.
