The National Women’s Law Center joined several organizations that signed onto amicus briefs filed on May 29, 2018 with the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit in the Overbey v. Baltimore case that challenged free speech restrictions on victims of police abuse. This matter concerns a woman who was denied half of her settlement award after responding to comments online about her experience of being brutalized by Baltimore police. The brief argues that such gag orders conceal from the public the level of unwarranted violence by police against civilians – particularly Black residents and how this harms Black women and LGBTQ individuals in particular given how they are disproportionately vulnerable to gender- and sexuality-based police violence.
