NWLC signed an amicus brief submitted on April 2, 2019 by The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights before the U.S. Supreme Court in the case Department of Commerce v. New York.

The issue at stake is whether the Department of Commerce, under the leadership of Secretary Ross, is able to add a new, untested, and unnecessary citizenship question on the 2020 Census. The brief supports the state of New York and refutes the agency’s claim that adding a citizenship question is integral to enforcing sections of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

This case is critical to NWLC’s work as a targeted citizenship question on the Census will lead to under counting already under-represented communities, resulting in less federal funding and representation.
