NWLC signed an amicus brief submitted by the Women’s Law Project and 23 other organizations in Commonwealth v. Tighe, a sexual violence case before the Pennsylvania Supreme Court. The brief supports the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and argues that the trial court appropriately limited a criminal defendant’s right to self-representation when it required standby counsel to conduct cross-examination of a child victim using questions prepared by the defendant. Requiring standby counsel to conduct cross-examination otherwise directed by the pro se defendant balances the defendant’s right to advance the evidence, arguments, and positions of her or his choice with the important goals of reducing emotional harm to victims and upholding the integrity of the justice system.
