In 2022, South Dakota introduced S.B. 46, a bill that would ban transgender girls and women from playing on girls’ and women’s sports teams. NWLC submitted written testimony opposing this harmful bill.
Note: in 2021, South Dakota introduced a similar bill, H.B. 1217, and NWLC also submitted written testimony opposing the bill and led a sign-on letter to the governor urging her to veto the bill. While the governor did veto the bill, she also issued two executive orders that had substantially the same effect as the vetoed H.B. 1217. However, the executive orders were later found to be unenforceable, resulting in the introduction of S.B. 46 in 2022.
