(Washington, D.C) Today the Department of Labor is expected to rescind an Obama Administration policy designed to ensure federal contractors’ compliance with laws against pay discrimination. The policy guided the Office of Federal Contractor Compliance Programs’ (OFCCP) evaluations of contractors’ compensation rates for groups of employees and was designed to help uncover gender and racial pay disparities. Under the Trump Administration’s new policy, federal contractors reportedly may conduct pay evaluations based on their own guidelines and decide which employees to compare.
The following is a statement by Emily Martin, Vice President for Education and Workplace Justice at the National Women’s Law Center:
“If these reports are correct, this misguided decision gives federal contractors a green light to manipulate their pay data and hide discrimination under the rug. At a time when the persistent wage gap costs women and their families over 10 thousand dollars a year, it’s outrageous that the federal government continues to toss out the tools to investigate and remedy pay discrimination. Once again, the Trump Administration’s message to corporations that discriminate on the basis of race or sex is, ‘Don’t worry; we’ve got your back.’”
