(Washington, D.C.) Just hours after the House Republicans passed the conferenced version of the “Tax Cuts and Jobs Act,” Republicans in the Senate did the same. This irresponsible legislation will raise taxes on 92 million families with incomes under $200,000. In addition, this bill will increase the deficit by $1.5 trillion, leading to drastic cuts to programs and services that reduce poverty and provide women and their families with a basic standard of living.
The following is a statement by Fatima Goss Graves, President and CEO of the National Women’s Law Center (NWLC):
“Early this morning, Senate Republicans turned their backs on millions of workers across America by supporting a devastating tax bill that rewards the wealthiest at the expense of working families. Millions will face higher taxes and eventually witness steep cuts to critical programs—like Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security and nutrition assistance—that they depend on to survive. We will never accept this Republican plan that serves a huge feast to the wealthiest while giving only scraps to working families. These tax cuts must be repealed.”
