House Passes Unconstitutional Nationwide Abortion Ban

Posted on October 3, 2017 Issues: Abortion Health Care & Reproductive Rights

(Washington, D.C.) Today, the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 36, a nationwide ban on abortion. The bill is an unconstitutional challenge to Roe v. Wade that picks an arbitrary cut-off point in pregnancy and then criminalizes abortion.

The following is a statement by NWLC President and CEO Fatima Goss Graves:

“This bill is blatantly unconstitutional and heartless. Last week, Senate Republicans tried to strip abortion coverage from millions during their failed attempt to repeal the Affordable Care Act. Now, House Republicans have cruelly voted to deny women access to abortion at an arbitrary cutoff point, making clear they will stop at nothing in their quest to criminalize all abortions. Donald Trump’s campaign promise to end legal abortion cannot be a promise kept. The Senate must reject this bill and refuse to engage in this political crusade that puts individuals’ health and rights at risk.”
