(Washington, D.C.) Today, Senator Dianne Feinstein of California will become the highest-ranking Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee when the new Congress convenes. She will replace Senator Patrick Leahy of Vermont, who will take the top Democratic position on the Appropriations Committee.
The following is a statement by Marcia D. Greenberger and Nancy Duff Campbell, Co-Presidents of the National Women’s Law Center (NWLC):
“In these uncertain times, it is both historic and reassuring that Senator Dianne Feinstein will become the first woman of either party to serve as the highest-ranking member of the Senate Judiciary Committee. Her steady hand, deep reservoir of knowledge, and strong judgment are truly needed today more than ever.”
Nancy Duff Campbell:
“The Judiciary Committee has a critical role in determining who will become the next Attorney General, the ninth member of the Supreme Court, new judges on the federal courts, and a host of legislative issues important to women and their families. Her depth of understanding and experience on these issues will serve her—and the country—well.”
