Last week the National Women’s Law Center applauded President Obama’s Administration for releasing a budget blueprint that diverged significantly from those of the last eight years. We saw investments in health care, early education, child nutrition, job training and tax credits – vital supports that were virtually ignored by the previous Administration.
The President’s budget marked a watershed moment in how we help our nation’s most vulnerable women and families and that’s why the National Women’s Law Center has pledged to be a leading member of “Rebuild and Renew America Now,” a coalition announced today that is dedicated to making President Obama’s budget a reality.
More than 40 major organizations and unions have already joined the coalition, including the AFSCME, Americans United for Change, SEIU, AFL-CIO and ACORN. The support for President Obama’s budget is resounding but its passage is certainly not a guarantee. The budget offers a smart plan for helping our nation get back on its feet by increasing investments in key supports for women and their families. Equally important, it does so by cutting subsidies to special interests and beginning to make corporations and the very wealthy pay their fair share of taxes.
Today marked only the beginning of our work and we expect it to be an uphill battle. But we will be working closely with our newly formed coalition, the Obama Administration and Congress to restore fairness and responsibility to our budget – it’s not only what we expect but what we demand.
