The following is a statement by Marcia D. Greenberger and Nancy Duff Campbell, Co-Presidents of the National Women’s Law Center, on the nomination of Professor Goodwin H. Liu to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. Professor Liu is Associate Dean and Professor of Law at the University of California, Berkeley School of Law (Boalt Hall). Professor Liu was voted out of the Senate Judiciary Committee today. “We cannot imagine an individual more qualified to fill this important position. Without question, Professor Liu would bring outstanding academic and legal credentials and a brilliant legal mind to the Ninth Circuit. He is a person of the highest integrity, fairness, even-handedness and collegiality, who is deeply committed to public service and the rule of law. We have worked with Professor Liu over a number of years and in a variety of settings, including as a member of the Board of Directors of the National Women’s Law Center, and have seen first-hand his extraordinary talents and personal qualities. At his April 16th hearing, Professor Liu made clear that he understands and respects the role of a federal appellate judge and that he would approach each case with impartiality and an open mind. We are confident that, if confirmed, Professor Liu would be an exceptional member of the federal bench. “The National Women’s Law Center strongly supports the nomination of Goodwin Liu. We urge the Senate Judiciary Committee and then the Senate to swiftly approve his nomination.”
