In these tough economic times, families need all the help they can get making ends meet. So they shouldn’t miss out on federal and state tax credits for which they may be eligible. These credits can make a dollars-and-cents difference to families: last year, one family in Dallas, Texas received a $6,000 refund, which they used to pay for children’s clothes, a crib, and a car.

For tax year 2010, eligible families could receive:

  • Up to $5,666 from the federal Earned Income Tax Credit.
  • Up to $1,000 per child from the federal Child Tax Credit.
  • Up to $2,100 from the federal Child and Dependent Care Tax Credit.
  • Up to $800 from the Making Work Pay Credit.

Families can receive all of the tax credits for which they are eligible, and many states offer tax credits to working families as well. But families need to know about these tax credits in order to claim them when they file their taxes in early 2011!
