ASK! Will the moral or religious beliefs of your health care providers limit your access to health care?
Are you getting the care you need? More and more often, the moral and religious beliefs of certain health care providers are limiting the public's access to health care. Many consumers are unaware that these providers refuse to perform certain services or give information that patients want, even when the law requires that they do so. Consumers do not find out about limits on services until they are denied care. By then it is often too late to do anything about it. This brochure arms consumers with the information they need before they make health care decisions. Slip-Sliding Away: The Erosion of Hard-Won Gains for Women Under the Bush Administration and an Agenda for Moving Forward (April, 2004)
In ways both well-publicized and carefully hidden, glaring and subtle, the Bush Administration is rolling back women's progress in every aspect of their lives. Slip-Sliding Away shows that many of the Administration's actions with harsh effects on women are occurring almost completely without public scrutiny, and that some of its more well-publicized actions have a particularly harmful effect on women that is not widely known. The report includes recommended actions that should be taken to expand and protect women's rights and opportunities. Keeping Score: Girls' Participation in High School Athletics in Massachusetts
Keeping Score, a joint project of the National Women's Law Center and the Harvard School of Public Health, explores the persistent discrimination that girls in Massachusetts high schools face in sports participation opportunities and treatment of their teams. The report finds that girls in Massachusetts consistently lag behind boys in their participation in physical activity, depriving them of the health, social and emotional benefits of playing sports, and that girls of color fare even worse. Keeping Score calls for strengthened enforcement of federal and state gender discrimination laws; assistance to schools to enable them to achieve gender equity public education about the importance of sports participation; and partnerships between public health professionals and gender equity advocates to address barriers and promote girls' participation in physical activity. Power to the People: The Effectiveness of Ballot Measures in Advancing Early Care and Education (Executive Summary)
As states cut funding for child care and early education programs, many advocates for children have taken their case directly to voters. This report from the National Women's Law Center finds that voters are often willing to fund services that their elected officials have not always made a priority. Analyzing most of the measures that appeared on the ballot through 2003 in which increased investment in early care and education or after-school programs was the central or a significant component, the report concludes that ballot measures can be a useful tool for securing and stabilizing increased funding for early education, child care and after-school programs.
