The National Women’s Law Center (NWLC) seeks an energetic, detail-oriented intern with an interest in media, public policy, and women’s issues to provide support to NWLC’s Media Office in the Communications Department. The intern would work with Communications staff on media monitoring and analysis, maintaining press lists, writing press documents, and media research projects. Start and end dates are flexible. For over 40 years, the National Women’s Law Center has expanded the possibilities for women and girls in our country. The Center uses the law in all its forms: getting new laws on the books; litigating ground-breaking lawsuits all the way to the Supreme Court; and educating the public about how to make the law and public policies work for women and their families. The Center’s experienced staff take on the issues that cut to the core of women’s and girls’ lives in education, employment, health and reproductive rights, and income security, with special priority given to the needs of low-income women and their families.
Intern Duties and Responsibilities
The Media intern supports the Communications department with a broad range of media projects and activities, including helping to monitor news coverage of NWLC and assisting with the development of a quarterly media analysis report. The intern will also help research information on reporters and their beats and maintain press lists. Additionally, the intern will help monitor the blogging community and draft blog posts in response to timely issues in the blogosphere. The Media intern may also be needed to assist with other general media efforts to support the work of the Center. Interns will attend some planning and strategy meetings to learn about various communications approaches.
Successful interns are proactive, seek out assignments, ask questions, and attend events which provide the opportunity to network with NWLC staff and others in the field.
Applicants should have an interest in media and public policy, strong writing skills and an eye for detail. Experience with Microsoft Excel and social networking, and those pursuing a degree in journalism or communications are preferred.
The intern must be detail oriented and a self-starter. They must have the ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and complete assignments accurately by specified deadlines. They must have a commitment to progressive women’s issues.
