Improving Latina Health through Medicaid Advocacy:

A Toolkit

August 2007

Dear Advocate:

Latinos currently have the highest number of uninsured of any racial or ethnic group and Medicaid is vital to ensuring health coverage for many low-income Latinos.   Expanding and protecting access to Medicaid is a critical strategy for ensuring broader access to health care for low-income Latino families and reducing health disparities.

This toolkit provides a general overview of the ways Medicaid provides health care to the broader Latino community including analyses of program barriers and select states’ eligibility guidelines, and provides a framework for advocacy.   Specifically, the toolkit focuses on the unique challenges associated with Latinas’ access to health care, especially immigrants, and offers policy solutions to improving health outcomes and access to care for this population.

We are excited about partnering with the National Council of La Raza and look forward to working with you in the future on Medicaid advocacy at both the state and federal level.   Please contact us if you need additional information or have questions about any of the materials in the toolkit.

Sincerely,
